When my yahoo messenger is on it is always on in invisible. People on my list do not see me. But others do!?

Why does that happen, people who I do not know send me messages, some ask to talk others are soliciting. It is newest messenger, I have checked my settings, they all seem set correctly. I do not not respond I just delete. Any suggestions?
