Do you need snow chains if you have snow tires on a FWD car?

I am looking to get a 2006 jetta gli. it is FWD and I was wondering if I put snow tires on it in the winter, they would still require chains or they would let me through like they let AWD and 4WD cars through. I am a big snowboarder and I go up almost every weekend in the winter and stay at my cabin. Also, what kind of snow tires would you put on 17" rims? Thanks.
